Jo: Hello, I'm Jo and on BBC Learning English today we're talking to
the famous make-up artist Bobbi Brown.
Jo: She graduated from Emerson College in Boston with a degree in
theatrical make-up. Afterwards she moved to New York City to
work as a professional make-up artist.
Jo: Now she’s a global brand. But how did she start it all?
Li: Here she is talking to BBC Radio 4 about her personal stories.

I fell in love with make-up as a young girl and I was lucky enough to study makeup
in college, theatrical make-up in a regular university. And my mother is the
one that I thank for getting me interested in my career more as my passion and
not just a way to make a living.
Li: Sounds like behind every successful daughter there’s a great
mother.
Jo: Yes, because it was her mother who got her interested in her
career more as a passion rather than just a way of making a living.
Li: A career as a passion 热爱的事业;a way of making a living 谋生之
道。
Jo: In the next clip she talks about why she started her own business.

You know what? I found that women were obsessed with make-up but still didn't
feel good about themselves and needed to figure out a way to make themselves
look better. And most of the make-up on the market was very artificial and very
hard for a women to make herself look naturally pretty. And it was so simple for
me so I started with ten lipsticks.
Jo: She said that some women were obsessed with make-up.
Li: To be obsessed with 整天沉湎于某事。另一个短语是 to figure out
Jo: To figure out a way to make women look better, Bobbi decided to
develop her own products. She started with ten lipsticks.
Lipstick,
I think, can be magical, it can either enhance your natural beauty
or it makes you look worse.
Jo: I agree. But what I find difficult is that fashion changes all the time.
So should you follow the trend or stick to your colour?

There are so many trends out there whether it’s black lipstick or beige lipstick or
red lipstick – and there are people that always follow the trends but I think there
are as many modern women that really have been empowered to use make-up to
make themself look like themselves, which is my philosophy. A woman really
should not compare herself to anyone - whether it’s a supermodel or an actress -
and you should look like yourself at your most beautiful, and make-up is a way to
do it, so it’s not only about the trends.
Jo: We’ve just heard some good advice from Bobbi. Don't compare
yourself with anyone else. You should look like yourself at your
most beautiful. You should look natural.
To look your best.
Jo: But how can you make sure that you have updated your make-up
according to style and beauty? Here is Bobbi again with some
specific suggestions.

Often it’s about adding a concealer if you’ve never worn one. It’s about wearing a
corrector; which is something you wear under a concealer if you really have bad
dark circles. It’s about using a tinted moisturiser that will plump up your skin and
make you look fuller because everybody wants their face looking a little plumper
as we get older. And also it’s just about brightening colours so you don't look
washed out, really simple; and eyeliner, don't go anywhere without eyeliner.
Jo: Well, the first piece of advice is to wear a concealer or a corrector if
you have dark circles under your eyes.
话dark circles under your eyes, 那么最好使用遮瑕笔 you should wear
a corrector.
Jo: Her second piece of advice is to use a tinted moisturiser that will
plump up your skin.
Li: Tinted moisturiser 有颜色的护肤霜 to plump up your skin.
Jo: It’s also about brightening colours so you don't look washed out.
Jo: Finally don't go anywhere without eyeliner.
Well, those are tips from a make-up artist.
What do you think Jo?
Jo: Good advice I think. But on the subject of make-up, Chinese
students should pay particular attention to the verb, to wear. We
say to wear make-up; to wear lipstick and to wear concealer.
Li: That’s a very good language point.
Jo: We hope you’ve managed to pick up some of the most frequently
used expressions in the make-up industry.
That’s www.bbcchina.com.cn.
Jo: See you next time.
Li: Bye bye.
