What is your favourite means of holiday travel?

Now that the sun has reappeared after winter, British people are starting to talk about their summer holidays again.

Just as people choose different holiday destinations, they also have different preferences when it comes to travel. For example a lot of people love the freedom of driving so they travel by car. Others prefer travelling by train to avoid possible traffic accidents. Still others enjoy the physical challenge of walking or mountain biking.

So what do people enjoy most about different types of holiday travel? Yang Li and Diarmuid Mitchell hear from five people and find out what types of holiday they like best.

Diarmuid: Spring is in the air and people are thinking about their summer
holidays. Hi, I’m Diarmuid and welcome to BBC Learning English’s
programme, Holiday Travel.
We’ll be talking to five
people and find out what type of holidays they like best.
Diarmuid: We’ll highlight new words and phrases relating to the topic of
holiday travel.
Yang Li: But most importantly we would like you to enjoy the programme
and have a good time.
Diarmuid: Now Brian is a world traveler but he singles out one type of holiday
he enjoys most.

Well, over the years I’ve been on all different types of holidays – beach holidays
and walking holidays. But actually what I’ve discovered is, really the best kind of
holiday for me is a driving holiday, because it gives you such great freedom. And
these days you can go to most international airports with your driving license,
just hire a car, and then you have the freedom to move around a different
country, and stay in places, and get to places that you wouldn’t be able to get to
normally, that are away from the various tourist destinations.
Diarmuid: Did you get it? Brian said that the best type of holiday for him is a
driving holiday.
A driving holiday.
Diarmuid: Because it gives you great freedom and you can get to places that
are away from the various tourist destinations.
However, different people have
different preferences when it comes to means of transport. Listen
to David.

I travel by train, because you can just sit there and drink coffee and do the
crossword, and there’s no hassles with other motorists trying to kill you and that
sort of thing. It’s just a relaxing way of travel.
Diarmuid: To David the advantage of travelling by train is that there are no
hassles with other motorists trying to kill you, another way of
saying avoiding road accidents.
Yang Li: Hassles 麻烦 motorists 开机动车的人 to avoid road accidents 避免车
祸。
Diarmuid: Rory is married with two children. He told us that lying on the
beach is the perfect way to have a holiday.

The travel I enjoy most is travel anywhere where there’s a hot environment, so
that I’m guaranteed that when I’m relaxing I can just sit there, relax, enjoy the
sun, and forget my normal hectic schedule. It’s all about – lie here on a sun
lounger, soaking up the rays, cooling off in the pool every so often, and just
enjoying relaxing with the children, with my wife, and just saying, yes, this is the
perfect way to have a holiday.
Diarmuid: Rory loves beach holidays with warm weather and lots of sunshine.
Yang Li: Yes, he can totally relax and forget about his normal hectic
Diarmuid: He enjoys lying on a sun lounger, soaking up the rays and cooling
off in the pool every so often.
Yang Li: A sun lounger
Diarmuid: While some look for comfort others enjoy a bit of physical challenge
for their holidays.
Let’s listen to Hilary:

So I’ve done some quite intensive walking holidays. There’s a very long walk in
the UK called the Pennine Way that starts in Derbyshire and goes up to Scotland.
It’s 256 miles – or about 400 kilometres – and I did that with another person in
ten days, which was really, a big physical challenge, but it felt very rewarding.
Diarmuid: Hilary described her walking holiday as intensive.
She walked a distance of 400 kilometres in just
ten days! That’s amazing.
Diarmuid: Indeed it is. She followed a route called the Pennine Way, starting
from Derbyshire in the north of England and going all the way up to
Scotland.
Yang Li: The Pennine Way
Diarmuid: 400 kilometres is definitely a big physical challenge! But it was a
rewarding experience.
There are other forms of holidays that require
physical strength as well. Listen to Brian from South Africa:

The one is cycling - I have cycled through Vietnam, Costa Rica, Morocco etc. And
I enjoy mountain biking. The other trips that I enjoy are sailing. So I’ve been
sailing all over the world – the last one round the British Virgin Islands and the
Caribbean.
Diarmuid: Now we have just heard three types of holiday travel: cycling,
mountain biking and sailing.
Brian
is very fit and he enjoys the physical challenge.
Diarmuid: He has cycled through different countries including Vietnam, Costa
Rica and Morocco.
He has been sailing all over the world too.
Diarmuid: His last voyage was around the British Virgin Islands and the
Caribbean.
It’s so fascinating to hear people talk
about their travel experiences, isn’t it?
Diarmuid: Yes it is. You know, I’m tempted to try something different this
year myself.
Yang Li: Yes?
Diarmuid: Maybe a camping holiday in the summer?
That sounds a very good idea.
Diarmuid: Thanks for listening and don't forget to log onto our website:

Yang Li:
Diarmuid: Bye.
Yang Li: Bye.
