Would you like to change your career?
Programme Introduction
Job security is a priority for many people in these times of economic uncertainty and high unemployment. But what if your career is just not right for you? Might now actually be a good time to think about changing your career?
Li and Will hear from the experts on how to realise your dreams, what steps to take and what changes other people have made in their working lives.
William: Hello, welcome to BBC Learning English. I’m William.
William: For the past 12 months, we’ve talked a lot about the global economic
downturn and its impact on people.
Li: That’s right.

In total the US economy has lost 5.7m jobs…
Here unemployment is rising faster than at any time in the last 30 years…
Unemployment in London has reached a ten-year high. Figures out today…
William: But not everyone thinks this is a bad time.
Li: No?
William: Well, it is a tough time we’re going through, but people do have the
chance to re-evaluate their careers and think about other possibilities.
William: Speaking on BBC Radio 4, website founder Catherine Roan had this to
say:

So many people are unhappy in the work they are doing and we just recognise
that there has to be more to life. If you are going to look back at your career and
think, actually I didn’t enjoy that, then that’s been a real wasted life. And
therefore if we can help people to find jobs that they do enjoy then that has to be
a good thing.
William: She says that if we look back at our career and think we didn’t enjoy
our work, then that’s been a real wasted life.
Li: 没有意义的一生 a real wasted life.

I was sort of growing slowly dissatisfied with my life as a lawyer. It just wasn’t
me, it didn’t suit me. I just realised life's just too short to go in for the pay
cheque, there’s got to be something else. It was like selling your soul every day
when you go to a job you hate. I think that’s just unacceptable for anyone.
William: Entrepreneur Sahar Hashemi was unhappy in her job, she was growing
slowly dissatisfied.
Li: Dissatisfied
William: Being a lawyer didn’t suit her.
didn't suit her, 不适合她。
William: So she realised that life is too short to go in for the pay cheque.
Li: Pay cheque 工资单,life is too short for something 是一个英语里经常用的
William: Sahar also compared doing a job that you hate to selling your soul.
William: So if you don't want sell your soul, what should you consider? Alain De
Botton, author of The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work suggests we
should look for something that uses our strengths.
Insert
People have strengths and it’s very rare that strengths are fully aligned with
careers. So it’s not a question necessarily of jumping off into a more exciting
career or taking more risks. It’s just making sure things that you are good at and
you love are at the top of your personality as it were, at the top of your working
self.
William: Alain says it’s not about jumping off to a more exciting career or taking
more risks.
Li: That’s right.
William: It’s better to make sure that in your work you do things that you’re
good at and that you love.
William: And people have made changes so they are doing exactly that.
Catherine, who we heard earlier, gives us a few examples from her
workshops.

There are some people who just do quite normal changes from PR to teacher,
from lawyer to doctor, but actually we’ve worked with some fantastic people, I
met a business consultant we’ve worked with who is now a polar explorer. I met
someone at a workshop a few months ago who was working in events, and has
now started a job painting portraits of dogs, and is about to fly out to LA, because
she’s got some commissions.
Li: Catherine
William: PR, public relations
William: Teacher
William: A business consultant
William: Polar explorer
William: A painter specialising in painting portraits of dogs
William: These are all very dramatic career changes, and it seems when it
comes to making these changes, some people have chosen to follow
their dreams.
Insert
You just never know what’s possible and I think it’s about surrounding yourself
with really supportive people who believe in you and really anything is possible.
William: You have a better chance of success if you are surrounded by people
who believe in you and support you.
Li: That's right.
William: Please join us next time. Bye
